AnchorThe Aarhus ReWater project
by Aarhus Vand A/S.

Aarhus ReWater - the world’s most resource efficient wastewater treatment plant” is the title for this new ambitious and innovative project in Aarhus, where wastewater shall be treated and transformed into different kinds of new resources.
The project is in its initial planning phase with Aarhus Vand A/S as the project owner.

Aarhus Vand decided in the early phase to introduce systems thinking to create a common language across all engineering disciplines and different stakeholders. For this purpose, the ISO/IEC 81346 standard series was applied to establish the basis for the system architecture.

Next step was to use this base system architecture to analyze the interfaces among all main systems for the sake of getting the overview and to use this as one of the division criteria to split the different technology packages in the most optimal way.

Aarhus Vand will present their work so far, including the decision in relation to implementing systems engineering ways of working which had to be made at the executive level. The benefits and results from using systems engineering so far will also be presented by the project manager.

You can read the formal introduction of the ReWater project here.

Converting plastic waste into a new resource
by Makeen Energy A/S

Makeen Energy A/S has developed a plant, currently present and running in Randers, which continuously can convert waste plastic into raffinate oil with a minimum of additional waste. Despite the energy used in the process, the total carbon footprint is significantly negative.

As the first and only plant from Randers now is to be scaled at large, there was a need to establish a common ground and a common language to manage the complexity of the process and all related utilities. Since August 2024 Makeen Energy A/S has started to implement fundamental systems engineering disciplines such as system architecture, requirement management, system integration, system ownership and stakeholder management.

Makeen Energy A/S will present their considerations, decisions and preparations made on executive level to implement systems engineering in their organization. On the technical side, the starting point for the system architecture was based on the ISO/IEC 81346 standard series.

Makeen Energy A/S will share their first initial results and take-aways from the implementation process as well as technical highlights based on systems engineering.
